Ignore?
Rail and Marine Engineering
Design and make products for boats and trains
Automotive Engineering
Design and make products for cars
Chemical and Process Engineering
Engineer products such as shampoo, toothpaste and paint
Computers, Communication and ICT Engineering
Design and make products for computers , phones and the internet.
Electrical and Electronics
Design and make products such as radio controlled cars, smoke alarms and electric tooth brushes
Medical and Pharmaceutical Engineering
Designs and make products such as wheel chairs, walking frames, hearing aids and tablets
Structural and Civil
Makes tunnels , artificial environment domes (e.g. eco-domes, arboretum, leisure, winter sports domes) and wind power generators.
Mild steel
also called plain-carbon steel, is a metal alloy, a combination of two elements, iron and carbon.
High Carbon Steel
Iron alloyed with up to 2.5 per cent carbon. it's hard and used for cutting tools
Stainless steel
Is an alloy of Iron with a minimum of 10.5% Chromium. Chromium produces a thin layer of oxide on the surface of the steel known as the 'passive layer'. This prevents any further corrosion of the surface. Increasing the amount of Chromium gives an increased resistance to corrosion.
Aluminium
Has a low density. This means that it is lightweight for its size. It also has a very thin layer of oxides on the surface, which stops air and water getting to the metal, so it resists corrosion.
Duralumin
used in aircraft manufacture, is 96 per cent aluminium and 4 per cent copper and other metals.
Copper
It is soft, easily bent and it is a good conductor of electricity. It is used for electrical engineering
Zinc
is very resistant to corrosion from moisture. Is a very weak material. Used as a coating on screws and steel buckets.
Brass
Resistant to corrosion, fairly hard, good conductor of heat and electricity. User for Ornaments, cast items such as water taps. A Non ferrous Metal.
