We don’t want to say how long is a piece of string, but this can vary wildly. But we think the most effective, in fact the best way to learn Russian, is to first tackle the Cyrillic alphabet.

Once you’ve got that down, you’ll find it’s pretty quick. How long it takes for you to familiarise yourself with an alphabet that’s new to you is really the question.

There are 33 letters in the Russian alphabet. Six (A, E, K, M, O, and T) look and sound the same as they do in English. Twelve sounds you’ll know too, but will need to match them to a new symbol.

The remaining 15 letters are actually one of the aesthetic reasons to learn Russian. They’re so beautiful! Take this one: Ж. Lovely, huh? It’s called ‘zhe’ and sounds like the s in pleasure. Very apt!

So, how long does it take to learn Russian? Not too long if you’re dedicated to learning and practise often. Little and often, recalling what you’ve learnt and adding a bit more. That’s how to learn Russian fast.

While grammar is helpful in building your own sentences, which is vital in conversation (learning things by rote is ok, but conversation is essential!), it’s better to just give talking a go and make a human connection.

That’s why we get you to start speaking from the beginning, and let you choose to learn what’s important to you. If you like to travel, learn that first. When you focus on material that excites you, you'll be more motivated to practice regularly and immerse yourself in the language. Soon enough, you'll be chatting away in your new language like a native speaker.

These hand-picked words and phrases are chosen by our language experts for two reasons: that they are useful in real-life situations, and they are spoken in the same way that a local would.
 
 
There is nothing more discouraging to a language learner than finding out that the phrases they’ve spent hours learning are irrelevant or outdated. You trust us to not only to teach you the language but to do it in a way that is useable in the real world and can connect with native speakers. Otherwise, what’s the point in learning a language if you can’t use it in real situations?

There are three problems that Memrise addresses from textbook learning. The first is that people often feel disengaged because they feel the content is either boring or irrelevant. We let you choose what’s important to you so you don’t have to wait to learn those phrases. Second, you can’t hear how the language sounds in a textbook. That’s why we have thousands of videos of native speakers to teach you instead. Lastly, you don’t get to speak it out loud. Our talk-first approach not only helps you learn a new language fast, but we build your confidence to speak from the very first lesson.

Hello! You’ve come to this page because you’ve previously learned or created flashcard decks (also known as courses) using Memrise. 

From mid-March, all courses created by Memrise users will be moved to a new sister website called Decks by Memrise. Here's what you need to know:

Memrise will only house our official language courses after the move.

We're moving all community-created courses over to a new website and mobile app called Decks.

Your login details for Memrise will work for Decks.

You won't lose any of your learning progress, it will be migrated to Decks.  This includes words learned, points, leaderboard positions, and streak.

The way you create courses will be the same as before. However, please note that from mid-March, creating courses will only be available in Decks.
