There are 33 letters in the Russian alphabet. Six (A, E, K, M, O, and T) look and sound the same as they do in English. Twelve sounds you’ll know too, but will need to match them to a new symbol.

The remaining 15 letters are actually one of the aesthetic reasons to learn Russian. They’re so beautiful! Take this one: Ж. Lovely, huh? It’s called ‘zhe’ and sounds like the s in pleasure. Very apt!

So, how long does it take to learn Russian? Not too long if you’re dedicated to learning and practise often. Little and often, recalling what you’ve learnt and adding a bit more. That’s how to learn Russian fast.

If you’re worried about how to learn Russian language, you needn’t be. Though you might find it alien to learn the Russian alphabet, the grammar shares many grammatical systems and patterns with other languages you may be more familiar with.

One of the first things you’ll look at when you learn Russian grammar is gender. The gender affects words across the Russian vernacular. Don’t worry too much about it now, but pay attention to the gender of vocabulary as it’ll help you out for future Russian language lessons without you even realising!

Another basic when you learn Russian language is adjectives. Again, the ending will often change depending on the gender, as in many European languages.

The second person pronoun, ‘You’, can be formal or informal in Russian. It’s probably better to default to formal – Вы (note the capital letter). If you go straight to informal, you might cause offence, especially with older people or strangers.

But remember! If you’re taking a Russian language course, grammar isn’t the most important thing. Connection is. While grammar is helpful in building your own sentences, which is vital in conversation (learning things by rote is ok, but conversation is essential!), it’s better to just give talking a go and make a human connection.

When you talk to people in Russian, they’re going to be more interested in getting to know you and having a laugh than seeing you can use the subjunctive correctly. In fact, they probably won’t even notice!

It’s not as scary as it sounds! The Testing Effect is just the name of the scientific finding that we learn better when we are tested on information, rather than just looking at it. That’s why everything in Memrise, apart from the first presentation of new words, is a mini test – because that works best for your long-term recall. 

Every time we are tested on a word, our memory of it strengthens. This starts to fade over time, but it fades slower the better we know the word. The most effective way to keep the memory is seeing the word over gradually increasing intervals of time, just before we forget it. That’s why Memrise has a built-in algorithm that calculates the optimum moment to test you on words, so your memory stays sharp.

This is the principle of what makes an effective learning programme: start with simpler information and increase the complexity over time. This is how we design Memrise courses. We won’t throw you into the deep end so you lose motivation, or teach you senseless, random phrases you’ll never use. We give you a strong foundation and build on that progressively so that your learning sticks in the long term. 

There is some hardcore science behind our course design. However, none of it would make the final cut if it could not also be the most important thing of all – fun! Dr Hannah Tickle did her PhD at UCL and is currently a post-doc at the University of Oxford. She does research on what goes on in human brains when we learn and make decisions. Many traditional learning methods insist on teaching irrelevant words and focusing on grammar.
